MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, MP4, MOV, WebM · up to 60 minutes
An audio cleaner removes background noise from a whole recording in one pass. Denoisa finds the speech and turns down fans, hum, traffic and chatter, so you don’t need to identify each noise or select a noise sample first. Files up to 5 minutes are free to clean in your browser, with no sign-up. Here is where to start for your kind of recording, what cleaning won’t fix, and what to do afterwards.
What an audio cleaner fixes, and what it leaves alone
It finds the speech and turns down everything else, whether that is steady, like hum and hiss, or changing, like traffic and chatter. With Standard you can choose how strongly it works, and there is nothing else to set.
It does not even out loudness or edit anything. Cleaning can make speech a little quieter: in our noise test the loudest speech dropped by 1.5 to 3.2 dB with Standard and 0.5 to 1.5 dB with Enhanced. If the result sounds soft, raise the volume in your editor. This is an air-conditioning recording, cleaned with both modes.
Sample: a voice over the hum of an air-conditioning vent.
Where to start with your recording
Use the free preview on any of these. Expectations matter more than settings: noise can be removed, but a voice that was never captured well can’t be rebuilt.
| Recording | Usual problem | Start with | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone voice memo | Room noise, phone far away | Standard | Clean if you were close to the phone |
| Meeting or call | Fans, typing, several speakers | Standard | People far from the mic may stay faint |
| Lecture from the back of a room | Distance and echo | Enhanced | Less noise, but echo remains |
| Interview in a café or street | Chatter and traffic | Standard | Noise drops; compare both on s and t sounds |
| Old tape or voicemail | Hiss and thin sound | Enhanced | Less hiss; lost treble doesn’t come back |
When a recording has several noises at once
This sample has conversation, clatter and a milk frother behind the speaker, and they all change from second to second. Older tools need a clean sample of the noise, which doesn’t exist here. Both modes handle it in a single pass.
Sample: a voice over chatter and a coffee machine in a café.
Do you need to edit the file first?
No. Upload the whole recording and clean it before you cut anything. Editing afterwards is easier, because the gaps between words are quiet and your cuts won’t be audible as sudden changes in background noise.
Trim first only in two cases. The preview plays the first 30 seconds, so if the noisy part comes later, cut a short clip of it to test. And credits are charged by length, so removing a long silence from a file over 5 minutes saves credits.
Private recordings can stay on your device
Meetings, interviews and medical or legal notes are often not yours to share. Standard handles both the preview and the full file inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Only two actions send audio to our servers, and you choose both: Preview Enhanced sends the first 30 seconds, and Clean with Enhanced uploads the whole file. Uploads are deleted automatically 24 hours after upload.
What to do after cleaning
Audio comes back in the format you uploaded: MP3 stays MP3, M4A stays M4A, and lossless files come back as WAV. Files from MP3 and M4A also get a lossless WAV download. Keep the WAV if you plan to edit further, and export to MP3 once at the end, because every MP3 save loses a little quality.
For podcasts, clean each speaker’s track separately if you have them, then mix. For transcripts, run the cleaned file through your transcription tool, and compare with the original if words seem to be missing.
When cleaning won’t save it
Some damage is in the voice itself. Clipped, distorted audio stays distorted, strong room echo is only partly reduced, and people talking over each other can’t be pulled apart. Music with vocals looks like speech to the model. If a recording matters and you can record it again, a phone held close in a quiet room will beat any cleanup.
